A farm hand is a vital member of the agricultural team, responsible for assisting with various tasks related to the day-to-day operations of the farm. This role requires physical stamina, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Farmhands typically work under the supervision of farm managers or owners, contributing to activities such as planting, harvesting, and general maintenance

JOB DETAILS

  • Crop Maintenance: Assist with planting, watering, weeding, and fertilizing crops according to established procedures. Monitor plant health and report any issues to the supervisor.

  • Harvesting: Participate in the harvesting of crops, including picking fruits and vegetables, cutting grains, and gathering other produce. Follow proper harvesting techniques to ensure product quality.

  • Livestock Care: Provide care for farm animals, including feeding, watering, and cleaning living areas. Monitor animal behaviour and health, reporting any concerns to the appropriate personnel.

  • Equipment Operation: Operate farm machinery and equipment safely and efficiently, including tractors, plows, and irrigation systems. Perform routine maintenance tasks on equipment as needed.

  • General Farm Maintenance: Assist with general maintenance tasks such as repairing fences, buildings, and machinery. Keep farm facilities clean and organized.

  • Irrigation Management: Assist with the setup and maintenance of irrigation systems to ensure proper hydration of crops and pasture areas.

  • Pest and Weed Control: Help implement pest and weed control measures as directed by the farm management team. This may include applying pesticides or herbicides and monitoring for signs of infestation.

  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of daily activities, including crop yields, livestock inventory, and equipment usage. Provide regular updates to farm supervisors.

  • Health and Safety: Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and others. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.

  • Team Collaboration: Work cooperatively with other farm staff to accomplish daily tasks and achieve farm goals. Communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors.

Essentials:

  • High School Diploma 
  • Physical stamina and the ability to perform strenuous tasks for extended periods.
  • Basic knowledge of agricultural practices and equipment operation.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions closely.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.

Desirable:

  • Previous farm work experience is desirable but not always required; on-the-job training may be provided.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, maturity, and good judgment, as well as being capable of communicating with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Team player with the ability to interact with people from various cultures and backgrounds.
